Library project update; working on local craftsmen opportunities

Construction takes time. And from outside the construction area, the LaGrange County Library building project seems to be taking a lot of time.          But everything is pretty much on schedule. “We start the steel work today,” said Bruce Lord of Shawnee Construction on Monday. “All of the basement slabs are poured.” With that portion of the project done, work will start to take place above ground and residents will be able to see the progress being made.

Ark Dinner and Auction Sept. 14

The 3rd Annual Ark Animal Rescue and Adoption, Inc. Dinner and Auction will be held Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the LaGrange County 4-H Fairgrounds Community Building. This year’s event will feature a haystack dinner with lots of homemade desserts, followed by a silent and live auction.

Queen of the Boondocks Pageant to be held at Pigeon Riverfest

Ever wonder where the “boondocks” is located? Well, Mongo, Ind., is proclaiming itself the boondocks, with an official “Queen of the Boondocks Pageant” at this year’s Pigeon Riverfest. This is unlike any other queen contest around, contestants will be judged on boondocks skills…hay bale tossing, nail driving, tractor driving, and Carhartt modeling are all elements of the contest. Entrants are encouraged to bribe the judges with their best baked goods and at the end of the day the winner will be crowned in true boondocks style.

MEC plans new events for 2010-2011

A number of events have been booked into the Michiana Event Center, Inc. (MEC) for the remainder of this year and into the first part of 2011. The MEC is located in a former industrial building on SR 9 south of the Toll Road. Two events have been held at the MEC so far this year. The Northern Indiana Woodworkers’ Association (NIWA) held its furniture expo at the MEC April 26-28, and a Michiana Driving Horse Sale was held June 19.

County unemployment rate rises as labor force shrinks

Technically, LaGrange County had only five new unemployment claims for July. However, changes in the labor force numbers caused the overall unemployment rate to rise for July. According to the numbers released Friday by Indiana Workforce Development, LaGrange County had a 11.5 percent unemployment rate, up slightly from the revised June rate of 11.1. That puts LaGrange back in the top 20 counties in the state, tied at 16th with Vermillion and Vigo counties.

County and towns tackling growing K-2 problem

So far, the evidence is anecdotal, but local authorities feel the problem is real enough and growing that all four incorporated towns and the county are looking to put the brakes on the sale of K-2. K-2 is a substance that is being sold technically as incense, but can apparently create the same, if not more intense, reaction that marijuana creates.

Shipshewana Library Open House planned for Sept. 11

An Open House for the newly remodeled Shipshewana Branch of the LaGrange County Library is being planned for Saturday, Sept. 11. The remodeling is completed and the library is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Commissioners to consider K-2 ordinance

County commissioners reviewed the first draft of an ordinance that will regulate the sale or possession of synthetic substances that have been compared to marijuana and are commonly called K-2 or spice. The ordinance will cover all unincorporated areas of the county.

The second annual Nate's 5K Road Run was held in Howe on Saturday, August 7. Josh O'Brien turned in the fastest time of 17:27, with Curtis Kent taking second in 17:50. Caleb Lehman was third in 18:50.

LaGrange County Council starts budget review

Members of the LaGrange County Council started a day and a half budget review process Monday morning. All members of the council, Charles Ashcraft, Jac Price, Michael Strawser, Ryan Riegsecker, Fred Brown, Kay Myers, and Steve McKowen, were present. Regarding pay increases for county employees, county commissioners all have a different perspective and they were not able to reach a consensus to make a recommendation to the council.

Pigeon River detail targets illegal activities

Indiana Conservation officers, along with Indiana State Excise Police, IMAGE Drug Task Force, LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, and LaGrange Police Department, converged on the Pigeon River in LaGrange and Steuben counties Aug. 7 after receiving numerous complaints from the public this summer regarding illegal activities that had been occurring on the river.

Commissioners approve rezone of 31-acre tract

County commissioners approved the rezoning of 31 acres of land at Monday’s meeting. The rezone came to commissioners from the plan commission with a negative recommendation. The area in question was zoned agricultural prior to 1999 when a request to rezone a large tract to S-1 was approved. Jay D. Hostetler, the developer, said that the muckland is not suitable for development as housing and had requested the rezone.

‘America’s Most Wanted’ lending hand in search for LaGrange County fugitive

According to Indiana State Police Detective Jeff Boyd, “America’s Most Wanted” has posted a LaGrange County fugitive on their website and is asking the public for their help in locating this man who is wanted in both Indiana and Michigan. “I know there are some worse people out there, but it would be great to get him off the streets” Boyd said.

The Shipshewana Branch Library at 250 Depot St. is now open with regular library hours beginning Monday, Aug. 2, at 11:30 a.m. This branch library is newly remodeled and handicapped accessible to all.
