Woodland gridders route Panthers

Woodlan raced to a 29-0 lead over Prairie Heights after one quarter and cruised to a 55-29 victory over the visiting Panthers in varsity football action last Friday night.

Jaylin Bennett accounted for three of the four Warrior scores in the opening 12 minutes on runs of 34, four and 15 yards. T.J. Sewell took a pass from Corbin Smith 40 yards to paydirt for the other Woodlan touchdown.

The hosts took a 36-0 lead early in the second period on a 16-yard pass from Smith to Greg White. Prairie Heights got two of the scores back on a four-yard scoring scamper by Bobby Blum and a 59-yard punt return by Matt Neeley. But Sewell returned the kickoff following Neeley’s tally 95 yards for a touchdown, giving Woodlan a 42-16 halftime lead.

Joey Barry and Kyler West notched touchdowns for the Panthers in the second half. Barry ran 12 yards for one score, while West sprinted 49 yards for the other.

Blum finished with 166 yards to spearhead the Heights attack. Sewell caught five passes for 105 yards and ran five times for 52 yards to lead Woodlan.

The 1-4 Panthers return to NECC play this Friday night at Fremont.
