Winifred Bassett

Winifred B. “Winnie” Bassett, 100, Nevada Mills (Angola), Ind., died Monday, February 9, 2015, at Northern Lakes Nursing Center in Angola, Ind.

    She was born May 9, 1914, in Nevada Mills, Ind., to Roscoe and Lola (Casebeer) Munger.

    The one-room school and white church, on the millpond at her parents’ homesite, provided her with an education.  She graduated from Orland High School, where  she was in every play produced and served as yell leader for all four years of high school. She studied for three years at Manchester College plus trained at Saint Francis College, earning an MS-BS in psychology and education. She spent 10 years as a trade show demonstrator with her first husband, Paul Speicher. After retirement from teaching she married Ollie Bassett and moved to Boynton Beach, Fla.

    Surviving are one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Scott and Helen Snellenberger, Angola, Ind.; two great-granddaughters, Roxanne and Jennifer Snellenberger, both of Angola; one great-grandson, Troy Snellenberger, Angola, Ind.; six great-great-grandchildren, Dakota Snellenberger, Kaitlyn, Konnor, and Karma Snellenberger, Cole Snellenberger, and Carter Napier; two sisters, Maxine Pardon, Florida, and Iris Thomas, Angola, Ind.; and one brother, Lynn (Doc) Munger, Fremont, Ind.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Paul Speicher and Ollie Bassett, one daughter, Gloria E. Stewart, one grandson, George Snellenberger, one sister, Rozena Ewers, and one brother, Wendell (Pat) Munger.

    Visitation is 1-3 p.m. Sunday, February 15, at Beams Funeral Home in Fremont, Ind.

    Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, February 15, at Beams Funeral Home in Fremont, Ind., with Reverend Duane Stidham and Pastor Craig Johnson officiating.

    Burial will be in Lake Gage Cemetery at a later date.

    Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of Steuben County or Nevada Mills United Methodist Church.
