The Westview School Board modified the school calendars for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years at their meeting Thursday evening.
The changes were made as pressure from legislators to have a later start date for schools has dissipated, Superintendent Randy Zimmerly told the board. The two years had later start dates in anticipation of the state mandating a later school year start date.
For 2012-2013, the start date moves up by one day, to August 15. Zimmerly pointed out that this will allow the district to complete the end of the first semester prior to the start of the Christmas vacation.
The 2013-2014 school year saw a more dramatic shift in its calendar, as the corporation will move the start date up by a full week. “It now looks almost exactly like the 2012-2013 school year,” Zimmerly said. The first staff day will be August 13, with students reporting for classes August 14. The last day of classes will be May 23, which will allow the school to hold its graduation on the traditional date of the Friday prior to Memorial Day, Zimmerly pointed out.

Zimmerly gave an overview of the administration’s plan for staffing next year, which can change based on actual enrollment and needs.
The district will have a Request for Proposals for technical support, Zimmerly said, which will be for a three-year contract.
Zimmerly thanked Rob Yoder for his work in organizing and building the new softball building that is nearly completed.
