Lukas Long of Lakeland and Brian Mullett of Westview claimed individual championships Saturday at the Westview Invitational wrestling meet.
Long edged Austin Slate of Penn, 4-2 in the finals of the 113-pound weight bracket. The Laker, now 19-1 on the season, ace received a forfeit victory in the opening round and pinned Thomas Smith of Central Noble in the semifinals.
Mullett clinched the 120-pound division title with an 8-5 decision win over Jarrett Selis of Penn. Mullett, now 11-2, also advanced out the first round with a forfeit, then stuck West Noble’s Joe Barrientos in the semifinal round.
Four county grapplers earned runner-up ribbons in their respective weight classes. Cole Long and T.J. Thompson did so for Lakeland, bringing their personal records to 18-2 and 17-3, respectively. Long forged a 15-3 major decision over Brent Marker of Central Noble in the semifinals of the 106-pound flight before falling to Marcus Swift of Fort Wayne Concordia, 12-9 in the finals.
Thompson reached the finals of the 138-pound class with a 22-second pin of South Bend Adams’ Evan Ridenour and a 7-2 defeat of West Noble’s Chandler Hyndman. The the title bout, Thompson lost a 1-0 decision to Jared Curcio of Penn.
Tony Steglich and Michael Yankosky each placed second for Westview. Pins over Jacob Dillman of Concordia and Simeon Teague of Penn in the first two rounds sent Steglich to the finals of the 145-pound bracket. There, the Warrior dropped a 7-4 decision to Spencer Richter of Central Noble.
Yankosky powered his way to the finals of the 285-pound group with a pin of Penn’s Michael Beghtel and an 11-9 victory over Alex Kunkel of Concordia. Kail Boyd of South Bend Adams then pinned Yankosky in the finale.
Placing third for the host Warriors were Trey Kennedy (132 pounds), Logan Good (152) and Taylor Warren (182).
Penn, which took firsts in six of the 14 weight divisions, easily won the team championship with 284.5 points. Fort Wayne Concordia was second with 176.5, Lakeland third with 160.5 and Westview fourth with 151.
