Westview girls win NECC Championship

Westview clinched its first NECC girls basketball championship in six years last Friday night with a 59-51 victory over visiting West Noble.

The triumph gave coach Randy Yoder’s Lady Warriors a final league mark of 10-0, one game better than Fairfield (9-1). Westview’s last title came in the 2007-08 campaign when the Tiffany Fisher-led Lady Warriors also compiled a perfect, 10-0 conference record.

“I’m really happy for the girls to able to clinch the conference title, as that was one of their goals going into this season,” stated Yoder.

Spurts of 18-13 and 15-10 in the opening two periods allowed Westview to build a 33-23 cushion. West Noble rallied to cut the difference to four (47-43) early in the final stanza, but the Lady Warriors would hold on to secure the win and the NECC crown.

Maria McCoy poured in 22 points and snared 15 rebounds in leading the Westview effort. Grace Hales chipped in 19 points, six boards, four assists and three steals. Kristen Duff hauled down eight rebounds and Sidney Byrkett dealt out five assists.

Kelsie Peterson knocked down 34 points to pace West Noble.

Westview wrapped up its regular-season slate Saturday afternoon in Emma with a 49-28 pounding of Jimtown.

Brooke Yoder netted 11 points for the Lady Warriors, who jumped to a 16-3 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Putting in 10 points apiece were Byrkett, Hales and McCoy. Duff recorded five rebounds and two steals, while Hales added five assists.

Topping Jimtown with seven markers was Rachel Miller.

The 17-3 Lady Warriors begin defense of their 2A sectional title this Friday night at 6 p.m. against either Bremen or LaVille. “We’ll definitely need to use the same intensity and approach we showed this weekend in practice this week to get ready for the sectional,” Yoder observed.
