Westview scored seven goals in the first half and cruised to a 7-0 victory over West Noble in the finals of the Class 1A girls soccer sectional at Garrett Saturday afternoon.
Riley Hochstetler put in three of the Lady Warriors’ seven markers. It was the second hat-trick of the tourney for the freshman and she finished the sectional with eight goals.
“We came in with a game plan of being aware of our spacing on the field, taking advantages of quick switches in possession and being crisp with our passes,” said Lady Warrior chief Jon Jantzi. “The girls accomplished all of those things and more in the first half and I couldn’t have been prouder of them.”
Michelle Mowery, Tori Oesch, Stephenie Mowery and Karey Haney also found the back of the net with shots for Westview. Both Mowerys, Rachelle Whitaker and Kayla Yoder each collected one assist.
In the second half, Jantzi pulled most of his starters to allow some of his reserves to experience the sectional atmosphere. Though the Lady Warriors did not score following the intermission, they did keep the ball in the West Noble end for much of the final 40 minutes.
“We were mindful of keeping our starters healthy, but also show some respect for West Noble,” said Jantzi.
“Winning a sectional is always nice but this one is a little sweeter because of how young we are in some spots and the way our seniors have led us throughout the year,” Jantzi added. “I’ve worked with this senior class since they were playing at the West End Soccer League and they have come a long way.”
Westview keeper Stephenie Hochstetler stopped the only shot West Noble managed to squeeze off in the match. Lady Charger goalie Carolin Guzman made eight saves.
The 14-5-1 Lady Warriors move on to play host Mishawaka Marian (14-4-2) this Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Class 1A regional. A year ago, Marian downed Westview, 2-0 in regional play.
“Marian is the toughest team on our side of the (1A) bracket, so it will take our best effort of the season to beat them,” said Jantzi of the Knights, who whipped Glenn, 7-0 in the finals of the LaVille sectional. “But we’re going to show up, play our best and see what happens.”
Westview blanked Central Noble, 7-0 in the semifinals last Thursday. Steph Mowery racked up four goals and Riley Hochstetler two goals and an assist to lead the Lady Warriors. Erika Gamble logged the other goal.
Michelle Mowery topped the assist list with two, followed by Whitaker and Maddie Jones with one apiece. Stephenie Hochstetler made two saves.
