Westview took the first step in defense of its Class 1A girls soccer sectional championship Tuesday night in Garrett by blanking county rival Lakeland, 6-0.
The win earned coach Jon Jantzi’s 12-5-1 Lady Warriors a semifinal date against Central Noble Thursday at 7 p.m. The Lady Cougars trimmed Lakewood Park, 5-1 in the first match Tuesday.
West Noble and Garrett tangle in the opening match Thursday at 5 p.m. The winners of the semifinal contests return to Garrett Saturday at 12 noon to play for the sectional title and a trip to the Class 1A regional at Mishawaka Marian October 13.
Riley Hochstetler staked Westview to a 2-0 lead over Lakeland with goals in the first half. Tessa Zimmerly assisted on Hochstetler’s initial tally in the 12th minute of action. Her second goal came in the 22nd minute and was unassisted.
The score remained 2-0 until the 22nd minute of the second half when Zimmerly converted a pass from Karey Haney into the third Lady Warrior marker. Hochstetler completed her hat-trick with 13:46 left in the match, while Amber Roth and starting goalie Steph Hochstetler netted the final two goals late.
Morgan Jantzi earned an assist on Steph Hochstetler’s goal. Before leaving the net, Hochstetler made one save as the Westview keeper.
Lakeland, which concludes the season with a 4-9-2 record, got 24 saves from netminder Jessica Hoover.
