The Westview Elementary School Spelling Bee competition began in November as fifth and sixth graders participated in a preliminary round written test. Fifty-one students qualified to advance to the spelling bee.
The spelling bee was held on January 10 in Wilson Auditorium at the high school.
Lindsay Stoltzfus, daughter of Rich and Heidi Stoltzfus of Shipshewana, was declared champion. She is a sixth grader in Travis Davis’ classroom. Her winning word was “souvenir.”
Stoltzfus was also the 2012-2013 School Spelling Bee Champion.
Stoltzfus will advance to the LaGrange County Spelling Bee to be held Tuesday, Feb. 11, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Prairie Heights High School Auditorium.
Ryan Klaasen, son of John and Jennifer Klaassen of Rome City, was the runner-up. He is also a sixth grader in Travis Davis’ classroom. Klaasen bowed out of competition on the word “piccolo.”
