Westview downs Lakeland in boys tennis sectional

Westview downed county rival Lakeland, 4-1 in the opening round of the East Noble boys tennis sectional Wednesday night in Kendallville.

Straight-set wins by singles player Stephen Gierek and the doubles duos of Andrew Yoder-Zach Schrock and Taylor Eash-Jeryl Weaver propelled the Warriors, who now face West Noble in the semifinals Thursday at 5 p.m. The Chargers edged the Warriors, 3-2 when they met in the regular season back on September 8.

Gierek handled Austin Buonocore, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles bout. Austin Hostetler also won in singles for the Warriors, as he rallied to vanquish Isaiah Lehman in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Yoder and Schrock, who claimed the NECC No. 1 doubles division title a few days earlier, had no problem beating Ian Sonner and Anthony Combs, 6-0, 6-0. Eash and Weaver, the NECC runners-up in the No. 2 doubles group, aced Tony Koluder and Drew Grossman, 6-1, 6-2.

The lone Laker point came at No. 2 singles, where Christian Roose came back from an 0-6 loss in the first set to Trey Zabona to win the final two, 6-4, 7-6.

East Noble and Central Noble tangle in the other semifinal tilt Thursday. The semifinal winners are slated to return to Kendallville Saturday at 10 a.m. to battle for the sectional championship.
