Westview Boys topple Lakeland

Westview grabbed sole possession of first place in the NECC boys basketball standings with a 61-51 victory over county rival Lakeland last Thursday night in Emma.

The 10-point win pushed coach Rob Yoder’s 7-1 Warriors to 4-0 in the league, a half-game ahead of 3-0 Fairfield.

Down by as many as nine points in the early stages thanks to the three-point shooting of Laker snipers Spencer Mortola and Cody Richardson, the Warriors whittled the halftime difference to three (31-28). Consecutive three-pointers by Brant Yoder and Jordyn Bontrager early in the third quarter finally earned Westview its first lead of the contest.

“We were getting some good shots and once we got the lead, I thought it changed the momentum and Lakeland began to press a little on offense,” said coach Yoder. “Our defense was able to cut off their penetration and force them to keep shooting from the outside and they began to miss in the second half.”

The Warriors took a 41-39 edge into the final period, but quickly increased the margin to six on a basket by Adrian Brandenberger, followed by a steal and layup by Yoder. Moments later, Yoder converted a pretty feed by Brandenberger into a three-point play, boosting the hosts to a 48-39 advantage.

“Yoder’s steal was a big play in the game,” cited Laker mentor Ryan Yoder. “After that we started standing around, not moving on offense and began to miss our shots.”

Brant Yoder finished with 17 points to pace a balanced Westview attack. Seven other Warriors scored, led by Nic Raber with 10.

“One of the strengths of this team is that we have a lot of guys who can make plays, whether it be on offense, defense, rebounding or hitting free throws,” said the Westview chief. “We aren’t dependent on one or two players in any area.”

Jalen King netted 16 points to lead the Lakers, who dipped to 2-2 in the NECC and to 3-5 overall with the loss. Mortola totaled 14 markers and Richardson a dozen.
