Westview boys stop West Noble

For the second time this season, the Westview varsity boys basketball team traveled to Ligonier and dealt the West Noble Chargers a defeat.

Three weeks after beating West Noble, 59-50 in the semifinals of the NECC tournament on the same floor, coach Rob Yoder’s Warriors forged a 67-63 victory over their rivals from the south. The win kept Westview perfect in the league with an 8-0 mark, while the Chargers dropped to second place at 7-1.

“Our kids came ready to play and were very focused on what they needed to do,” said Yoder, whose Warriors stand 15-1 overall. “Two very good teams went at it tonight and we feel very fortunate to come out on top.”

Kyle Miller, whose 19 points led the Warriors, hit a basket late in the first period to give his club the lead for good, 11-10. The next time down the floor, Miller canned a three-pointer, triggering a 9-3 burst that extended the margin to 20-13.

Westview ended the first half on a 12-5 run that earned it a 36-23 advantage. The Warriors led by as many as 15 points in the second half before a late Charger rally closed the final difference to four.

Three other players joined Miller in double figures on the Westview scorecard. Jordyn Bontrager delivered 14 points, Chandler Aspy had 13 and Jamar Weaver came off the bench to score 10.

“That may have been Jamar’s best game,” said Yoder of Weaver, who replaced starter Brett Yoder early in the opening minutes due to foul trouble. “We have a lot of guys who can contribute and make plays.”

Aspy pulled down seven rebounds against the taller Chargers. Bontrager collected five steals and three assists.

Phil Miller paced 14-2 West Noble with 18 points. Nick Thomas had 15 and Keith Gibson sank 12.
