Westview Boys Dismantle Busco

Westview took a big early step toward securing the NECC boys basketball championship last Friday night with a 47-31 dismantling of Churubusco in Emma.

The Warriors never trailed in the game, as three-point baskets by Jordyn Bontrager and Jerry Schwartz in the opening period staked the hosts to a 13-5 lead. Both teams had trouble finding the bucket in the second quarter, which ended with Westview holding a 19-11 advantage.

Brant Yoder, the lone returning starter for coach Rob Yoder, caught fire in the third stanza, hitting four baskets to help boost the Warriors to a 34-21 lead. Yoder would finish with a game-high 17 points to go with four rebounds and two assists.

“Our guards really played extremely well tonight on both ends of the floor,” said the Westview chief of Yoder and Bontrager, who wound up with 10 points. “They took the ball to the basket, pressured the ball on defense and really controlled the game.”

Churubusco, which lost starting guard Josh LeFever to fouls late in the third quarter, scratched back to within 10 (38-28) midway through the final frame, but could get no closer. Chris Jones and Tyler Arrowsmith each tallied nine points to lead the Eagles.

“I was pleased with our defensive effort overall,” Yoder stated. “Our post players did a nice job of limiting Arrowsmith’s touches.”

Judah Zickafoose, who led Westview on the boards with seven rebounds, backed up Yoder on the Warrior scorecard with 11 points.

“We have a lot of guys still learning what varsity basketball is all about,” said Yoder of his 2-1 Warrior squad. “Hopefully we will keep improving as some of the younger players gain experience.”
