Three hits by Kohle Christner and the two-hit pitching of Judah Zickafoose carried Westview to a 4-0 victory over Mooresville in the championship game of the Culver Academy tournament Saturday afternoon.
Christner’s biggest hit came in the third inning, when he stroked a single to right-center field to score both Jamar Weaver and Tarrin Beachy, who had singled in front of him. Jake Berkey, who led off the frame with a single, had already tallied on a passed ball.
Zickafoose walked four and struckout seven in his complete-game gem. Doubles by Jacob Archer and Traver Harper accounted for the Mooresville hits.
Westview advanced to the championship round with a 4-2 semifinal victory over host Culver Academy.
The Warriors tallied all four of their markers in the third inning. Berkey walked to begin the rally and soon came trotting home on a triple by Zickafoose, who scored on the back end of a double-steal. Beachy singled home Weaver with the third Westview run and completed the base circuit on a passed ball.
Culver Academy tallied twice in the second on three walks, a hit batsman, a sacrifice and a fielder’s choice. Houston Haney, who relieved Warrior starter Derrike Johns in the second, held the Eagles scoreless after that to earn the pitching win. Haney gave up three hits, walked one and fanned five in 5.2 innings of work.
The two victories lifted Westview to a season mark of 14-5.
