A valiant comeback by the Lakeland girls basketball team came up short last Friday night, as the Lady Lakers dropped a 60-49 decision to West Noble in the semifinals of the 3A NorthWood sectional.
After falling behind 12-0, coach Sheila Moore’s charges spent the rest of the game chipping away at the Lady Charger advantage. They closed the gap to six (55-49) with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter, but West Noble free throws squelched the threat.
Abi Thompson poured in 20 points and grabbed three rebounds for the Lady Lakers, who finished the season 5-16. Nicole McKibben came off the bench to net nine points and seven boards, while Ashtin Kaminer collected eight points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists. Michaela Moore had eight points and three rebounds, Morgan Meyers two points and two assists, and Becca Levitz two points, six rebounds and three steals.
Kelsie Peterson led West Noble with 17 points. Haley Richardson and Kohdee Hicks sank 13 and 12, respectively.
NorthWood downed Fairfield, 58-29 in the other semifinal tilt. The Lady Panthers then topped West Noble, 48-33 in the finals Saturday night.
