Wawasee slips past Lady Lakers

For a half, it looked as though Lakeland would net its first girls basketball win of the season Tuesday night against the visiting Lady Warriors of Wawasee.

Sparked by a stifling defense which frustrated Wawasee ace KiLee Knafel and created several easy scoring chances, coach Sheila Moore’s Lady Lakers took a 22-16 lead into the dressing room at the intermission.

The second half, however, Knafel and Wawasee came to life.

The 5-7 senior, who had tallied 42 points in the Lady Warriors’ campaign opener at Westview, began to find the mark with her shots in the third period, triggering a 21-4 Wawasee run that flipped the advantage to the visitors. Knafel finished with 23 points as the Lady Warriors cruised to a 51-31 triumph.

Cassie Martinez backed up Knafel on the Wawasee scoresheet with eight markers.

Topping Lakeland with 10 points was Becca Levitz. Carlee Richardson and Abi Thompson each put in seven.

Thompson and Richardson paced the Lady Lakers on the boards with five and four rebounds, respectively. Ashtin Kaminer dealt out three assists and made three steals.

Lakeland won the junior varsity game, 34-21.
