Wawasee holds off Lakeland in Sectional action

Wawasee held off Lakeland, 38-34 in the opening round of the Class 3A girls basketball sectional in Syracuse Tuesday night.

The Lady Lakers, who dropped a 66-25 decision to Wawasee back in November, battled back from an early, 16-point deficit to pull within two (36-34) with 33 seconds remaining in the game. But free throws by Alexis Blunk and KiLee Knafel in the waning moments allowed the hosts to escape the Lakeland upset bid.

Knafel poured in 22 points to pace the Lady Warriors. The 5-7 junior scored her club’s first eight points and had 15 by the time the team’s broke for halftime.

Topping Lakeland with 11 points was senior Lauren McKibben. Freshman Abi Thompson chipped in eight markers.

The loss gave the Lady Lakers a final record of 5-16.

Wawasee (6-15) will meet West Noble (12-9) in the initial semifinal game Friday night at 6 p.m. Fairfield (16-5), which handled Tippecanoe Valley by a count of 52-43 Tuesday, takes on NorthWood (19-3) in the second semifinal. The championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
