Warriors dropped in soccer regional

For the second straight season, Mishawaka Marian ended the Westview girls soccer season with a shutout victory over the Lady Warriors in the Class 2A regional.

The Lady Knights forged a 5-0 triumph over Westview Saturday night in rainy Mishawaka. A year ago, Marian blanked the Lady Warriors, 2-0 in the regional round.

Shannon Hendricks booted home a penalty kick midway through the first half to get the Lady Knight express rolling. Denise Veldman and Gabbie Veldman tacked on goals later in the half, staking Marian to a 3-0 lead at the intermission.

Marian continued to control the ball in the second half, leading to goals by Elizabeth Cook and Maggie Hartnagle. For the match, the Lady Knights squeezed off 25 shots to just three for Westview.

Lady Warrior keeper Stephenie Hochstetler finished with eight saves.

Westview concludes the campaign with a sparkling, 13-6-1 record. Led by seniors Michelle Mowery, Morgan Jantzi, Krista Miller, Katie Hawk, Brooke Schwartz, Kayla Yoder and Stephenie Hochstetler, coach Jon Jantzi’s Lady Warriors won both the NECC regular-season and tournament championships for a fourth straight season.
