Warrior doubles team wins NECC tennis title

The Westview No. 1 doubles team of Andrew Yoder and Zach Schrock claimed the NECC championship in their division at the league’s annual tournament which finished up Saturday afternoon at Lakeland.

Yoder and Schrock, the top seed in the doubles flight, knocked off Angola rivals Chris Calvelage and Jordan Sager in the finale. After losing the first set, 7-6 (7-3 in the tie breaker), the Warrior duo roared back to take the second set, 6-2. They were leading 5-0 in the third and decisive set when Sager suffered a severe ankle injury, forcing him to retire.

A 6-2, 6-4 victory over the Lakeland pair of Anthony Combs and Ian Sonner Thursday in the first round began the title trek for Yoder and Schrock. In the semifinal round Saturday morning, the Westview unit aced Jeremy Seiler and Wade Regedanz of Fremont, 6-1, 6-2.

The Warriors’ No. 2 doubles crew of Taylor Eash and Jeryl Weaver also made it to the finals in their bracket. After whipping Eric Nofziger and Jaxon Davis of Angola, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round, Eash and Weaver upended Fairfield’s top-seeded team of Andrew Hoover and Isaac Miller, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the semifinals.

In the championship match, Eash and Weaver fell to the Fremont duo of Drew Sullivan and Brandan Arnos, 6-2, 6-4.

Angola, led by singles champions Craig Nofziger and Jake Honer, edged Fairfield, 49-47 for the NECC tournament team title. The Falcons had already won the regular-season crown with a perfect, 8-0 mark.

Fremont finished third with 43 points. Westview took fourth with 34.
