Walter Lockett Heal, 89, Philpot, Ky., died Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Heartford House Hospice of Western Kentucky.
He was born May 21, 1924, in Hartford, Ky., to Walter C. and Jenny Louise (Lockett) Heal.
He served in the U.S. Navy for six years and in the U.S. Army for 14 years, retiring after 20 years of service. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran. After his military retirement he was employed at Howe Military School, where he guided the rifle team to a state marksmanship championship and second place in the national military school division. He worked at Fan Coach Industries in Mishawaka, Ind. He and his wife moved from LaGrange to Philpot, Ky., in 1999 to be closer to their extended family. He was a member of First Christian Church in Owensboro, Ky., and frequently attended Beech Grove Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Martha A. (Beane) Heal; one daughter, Janet (Ed) Wildeboor, Renton, Wash.; three sons, Charles R. (Janis) Heal, Rowlett, Texas, Gary W. (Cathy) Heal, LaGrange, and Stephen W. (Crystal) Heal, Jacksonville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Patricia Butler, Owensboro, Ky.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 29, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory in Owensboro, Ky.
Burial is Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
