Nationwide, there are an estimated 6-8 million homeless kittens, puppies, cats and dogs entering animal shelters every year. About half of these animals are adopted. Tragically, the other half are put down.
The majority of animals euthanized are healthy, sweet pets who would have made great companions. The number of homeless animals varies by state – in some states there are as many as 300,000 cats and dogs put down in animal shelters annually. These are not the offspring of homeless street animals – these are the puppies and kittens of pets who were accidentally or intentionally allowed to breed.
This year will be the 20th anniversary of “World Spay Day” to be held on February 25. Animal Welfare Association, Inc. (AWA) is again offering a $25 voucher toward the spay or neuter of a companion animal. They are placing vouchers at King Animal Care Clinic, LaGrange Veterinary Clinic, and South Milford Veterinary Hospital, participating for the 14th year.
Vouchers will be available from February 1-28 or until they run out, whichever comes first. There is a limit of one voucher per household.
Call any of the above veterinarians to get an appointment scheduled. Be sure to ask for a voucher. If someone wants to use another veterinarian, call Debbie at 260-463-3406 to see if AWA can work with them on a voucher.
AWA is continuing the Spay/Neuter Transport to the H.O.P.E. Clinic in Ft. Wayne for 2014. The transport is on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Call Debbie at 260-463-3406 for pricing and transport information.
