Circuit Court Judge Scott VanDerbeck asked the county council for permission to seek a grant that will study alternatives to sending juveniles to jail. The request was approved by county commissioners last week and also needed approval by county council, which was granted Monday.
The community corrections grant, in an amount of $20,650, is to cover the period of February 1 to June 30, 2014. There will be a second grant cycle that will run from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. This second grant will be in the amount of $590,000.
Judge VanDerbeck has con-tracted with David Judkins to complete the first grant requirements by the June 30 deadline. County Auditor Kay Myers will administer the grant, which calls for $19,000 for the coordinator with $1,650 in expenses.
