Unemployment in LaGrange County is staying within 8 to 9 percent, falling for February to 8.2 percent. The rate had bounced up to 8.7 percent for January. A year ago, February 2012, the rate was 8.8 percent.
The drop of half a percent was due to the addition of 94 jobs in the county, according to numbers from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, and a drop of 77 from the unemployed roster. Seventeen people were added to the labor force for the county.
LaGrange County continues to be in the lower third of the state’s unemployment rates, coming in at 74th for February. Neighboring counties are all higher, with Elkhart County still leading the region at 9.8 percent. Steuben County reported 9.8 percent while Noble County had 9.7 percent.
Statewide, the unemployment rate rose slightly to 8.7 percent. A year ago, the state unemployment was at 8.3 percent.
Nationally, unemployment dropped two-tenths of a percent to 7.7 percent.
