Traffic stop leads to three arrests

Shortly after 1 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, an officer from the LaGrange City Police Department initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Poplar and Michigan streets in LaGrange. During the stop, the officer made observations that led him to believe that the occupants of the vehicle may have been in possession of and attempting to hide illegal drugs.

The officer then requested a K-9 from the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department to sniff the vehicle for illegal drugs. A sheriff’s deputy with his K-9 partner Kayla arrived at the scene and performed a K-9 sniff of the vehicle. A positive alert to the presence of illegal drugs was given by the K-9.

Following the alert, a probable cause search of the vehicle was performed by officers. According to the police report, baggies of methamphetamine and methamphetamine paraphernalia were located in the vehicle and on each of the two occupants.

Arrested at the scene of the traffic stop were:

Seth Andrew Bender, 20, of Topeka on preliminary charges of Possession of Methamphetamine and Maintaining a Common Nuisance.

Jeffery Lynn Coney, 49, also of Topeka on preliminary charges of Possession of Methamphetamine, Visiting a Common Nuisance, and Possession of Paraphernalia.

After the investigation at the scene of the traffic stop was complete, officers from the LaGrange Police Department with the assistance of the LaGrange County Prosecutor’s Office prepared a search warrant for a residence in Topeka belonging to Jeffery Lynn Coney based on evidence located at the scene of the stop. Superior Court Judge George Brown signed the search warrant permitting officers to search the Topeka residence.

Officers from the LaGrange City Police Department, LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department and Topeka Police Department executed the search warrant in the 200 block of Yoder Street in Topeka.

The search warrant led to the discovery of additional drug-related items associated with the possession, consumption, and delivery of methamphetamine. Based on the findings at the residence, additional charges on Jeffery Lynn Coney are being reviewed by the LaGrange County Prosecutor’s Office.

While attempting to locate a witness at a Topeka apartment complex during this investigation, officers found a wanted person out of Elkhart County and arrested him in addition to Bender and Coney.

Arrested in Topeka was Jesus Luciano Hernandez, 24, of Elkhart on an outstanding warrant for Probation Violation. His original charge was Armed Robbery.
