Topeka residents will decide – Three or five members on council

The Topeka Town Council voted Monday to put the question of whether or not to have three or five council members on the next general election ballot to let the town’s residents decide.

The idea of expanding the board from the current three members to five members has been tossed around for more than a decade, but in November 2012, it will go to the voters. The voting will coincide with the county’s election, the council was told, which will be more cost effective than holding a separate vote on the issue.

The council was told that if the measure to expand to five members passes, it would take effect January 2013. Two additional council members would be appointed to staggered terms that would begin at the first of the year.

Only voters living within the Topeka town limits would get to vote on the issue.

It was also announced that Friday, Dec. 2, will be the last day for leaf pickup by the town.

New board members and the new town clerk-treasurer will be sworn in at the last December meeting and will take office after the first of the year.
