Topeka had three candidates vying for the vacant clerk-treasurer position at the caucus held Monday afternoon.
June Slaven, Tanner Troyer and Robert Martz were seeking to fill out the term left by Katie Braid, who stepped down earlier this fall.
Precinct committeemen Jeff Brill from Clearspring Township, and Lori Carney from Eden Township cast their votes, tying with one vote each for Robert Martz and Tanner Troyer for the first three ballots.
Following the third tied ballot, LaGrange County Republican Committee Chairman Bob Murphy cast the deciding vote and opted for Troyer, noting his background in political science and economics that he can bring to the community. Troyer, a 2011 graduate of Ball State University, told the caucus that he felt the position was “the perfect intersection of those two degrees.” Murphy commented that it “is nice to see the youth stepping up to be included.”
