Thurman Smith

Thurman Smith, 68, Sturgis, Mich., died Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Parkview LaGrange Hospital.

He was born February 15, 1943, in Sayersville, Ky, to Joseph and Gertrude (Beverly) Smith.

Living in Sturgis, Mich., since 1967, he retired from Grumman Olson in Sturgis after 43 years. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the U.S. Army and earning the rank of SP4. During his service, he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Expert Badge (Rifle) and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a life member of Jack Johnston Chapter #88 Disabled American Veterans.

He was married March 8, 1964, in LaGrange, to Shirley Likes. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jennifer (Tony) Jones, Kendallville, and Melissa (Tim) Kovak, Troy; three sons, David (Helen Marioni) Smith, Sturgis, Mich., Dennis (Joyce Green) Smith, Sturgis, Mich., and Scott (Patty) Smith, Sturgis, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Kyle Smith, Brittany Smith, Andrea Smith, Bryant Smith, Kayla Garison, Austin Smith, Samantha Smith and Jacob Shears; five great-grandchildren, Bryce, Mayson, Curtis, Naomi and Sophie; two sisters, Meletha Fields, Kentucky, and Dorothy Dettrow, Ohio; four brothers, Herman Smith, Indiana, Roy Smith, Indiana, Gary Smith, Ohio, and Larry Smith, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three grandchildren, Maximus Sweatt, Alexander Sweatt, and Joshua Smith, and two brothers, Sherman Smith and Aaron Smith.

Services were held Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel in Sturgis, Mich., with Pastor Ken Beverly officiating.

Burial is in Ontario Cemetery, Ontario, Ind.
