State track and field meet results

A fourth-place finish by Lakeland shot putter Evan Garretson and a fifth by Westview pole vaulter Trey Kennedy highlighted the LaGrange County effort at the 111th annual IHSAA boys track state finals meet held Saturday in Bloomington.

Garretson tossed the iron ball a distance of 57-8.75 feet, six inches farther than the best toss authored by Avon’s David Schall (57-2.75) and just 5.25 inches short of third-place finisher Gelen Robinson (58-2) of Lake Central. Winning the event with a fling of 60-6 feet was Angelo Allen of Avon.

The Laker standout also competed in the discus, but fouled in each of his three preliminary throws.

Kennedy cleared 15-3 feet in the pole vault, the same height as Will Howard of Evansville Central and county rival Zach Shepard of Prairie Heights. Howard was awarded fourth place due to fewer misses and Kennedy took fifth over Shepard.

Winning the pole vault with a meet-record mark of 17-0.5 feet was Deakin Volz of Bloomington South. The previous standard was 17-0 produced in 2007 by Corey Shank of Fort Wayne Northrop.

Gary West nipped Carmel, 41-39 for the team state championship.

Lakeland freshman Kloee Fitch ended a fine rookie track season last Friday night in Bloomington by placing seventh in the discus at the IHSAA girls track state finals meet.

Fitch produced a top toss of 140-4 feet, a mere three inches less than the sixth-place finisher in the event, Micaela Hazlewood of Linton-Stockton.  Fitch bested eighth-place finisher Ashley Sosbe of Portage (138-3) by over two feet.

Taking first in the discus with a heave of 160-2 was Adriana Brown of Lawrence Central. Churubusco’s Katie Monk was second with a mark of 148-7.

The only other LaGrange County entrant in the girls state finals – Westview freshmen Taryn Pruitt – failed to qualify for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles.

Two state meet records fell Friday night, including the 300-meter hurdle standard of 42.03 seconds set in 2011 by Westview great Skyler Carpenter. Symone Black of Fort Wayne Concordia shattered Carpenter’s mark with a winning time of 41.36 seconds.

Lawrence Central claimed the girls team state championship with a total of 47 points. Pike was second with 38.
