Six-year sentence for fatal crash


Matthew Parish, 28, of Ft. Wayne, was sentenced to six years in prison this week for causing a crash that killed two people in 2009. Parish was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Parish was sentenced by LaGrange County Superior Court Judge George Brown to eight years after Paris was convicted of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, a Class C felony, with two years suspended.

Parish was booked into the LaGrange County Jail on Tuesday to begin serving his sentence.

The crash occurred on SR 5 near CR 50N on May 31, 2009. According to police reports, Parish was northbound on SR 5 that morning when his vehicle struck the rear of another vehicle, sending it across the center line and into the path of a third vehicle.

William Kase, 66, of Wawaka died at the scene of the crash. Leslie Handshoe, 47, of Wolcottville died while being transported to a hospital.
