The Philomaths of Howe held their October meeting at the home of Linda Simmons. President Kathy Kessler called the meeting to order, asking everyone to rise and recite the Collect, the Pledge to the American flag, the Pledge to the Christian flag, and to the Women of the Philomaths.
Refreshments were served by the hostess, Linda Simmons.
Members present were Marietta Abston, Marge Malone, Loma Hoffman, Barbara Yurs, Trish Boase, Linda Simmons, Liz Mann, Kathy Kessler, Susan Hughes, Dorothy Yunker, Jo Schrader, and Karen Yoder.
Secretary Dorothy Yunker read the minutes of the previous meeting and Treasurer Karen Yoder gave the current treasurer’s report. Karen also reported that she has not heard from Suzanne O’Connor, who presently lives in Maine. Other members volunteered that they have not heard from Gloria Poljack.
With little or no enthusiasm for the flower garden project, discussion was tabled for a second time. The ladies will be bringing canned food to the November meeting to donate to the Clothes and Food Basket in LaGrange. The business meeting ended with Liz Mann reading the Bible Verse: Exodus 20:12 and the Quote by Jimmy Carter; “We’ve uncovered some embarrassing ancestors in the not-too-distant past. Some horse thieves and some people killed on Saturday nights. One of my relatives, unfortunately, was even in the newspaper business.”
Programs for the 2012-2013 seasons will be given by members who volunteered to speak and teach about “Our Passions and Hobbies.” In previous months the members heard from Trish Boase on origami and Dorothy Yunker on Ireland and Waterford Crystal.
This month Barbara Yurs presented a program on genealogy – where to start and how to find yourself totally engulfed in this very interesting hobby.
The members hope to hear from Jo Schrader in November on Manger Scenes and Marietta Abston in December about the 12 days of Christmas.
