The Shipshewana Police Department submitted a request for a new car with all-wheel drive at Thursday’s council meeting.
Shipshewana Town Marshall Tom Fitch told the council that with the retirement of the town’s K9 unit, they wanted to put Officer Jasso in an AWD car that would get better gas mileage than the SUV used when he had the K9 partner.
The council approved the low quote of $26,876 from Eby Ford of Goshen.

The council was read a letter of commendation from Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, who praised the town’s police department for their efforts in the capture of Michigan fugitive Michael Elliot in early February. A vehicle the escapee took was located in Shipshewana, leading to a town-wide search for Elliot.
KuKui’s Shaved Ice owner Cindy Powell told the council that her business is looking for a new location, and is considering an empty building that is just north of the Van Buren Hotel. The area is zoned B-2 and Powell told the council that they are looking at the possibility of putting a residence on that location as well. That would require a variance from the county BZA as well as a letter from the town stating their approval of the idea.
The council approved notifying the county BZA that the variance would be acceptable to the town, if Powell pursues the location.
