Shipshe-Scott Alumni hold banquet

The 108th Banquet Meeting of the Shipshewana-Scott Alumni Association was held June 1 in the Shipshewana-Scott Elementary School Gymnasium. The Shipshewana School was established in 1897 with the first class graduating in 1905. The Scott School combined with the Shipshewana School System in 1955, with the first graduating class of the combined Shipshewana-Scott School graduating in 1956.

Greeters Darlene and Jack Geyer and Pauline and Tom Atwater met the 126 members and guests. President Mike Bowen presented a welcoming speech to all and announced the honored classes. Paul Mishler gave the invocation before the food was served. This year‘s caterer was Fashion Farm of Ligonier.

Following the meal, the business meeting was called to order with Minerva Belote opening with the minutes of last year’s banquet. Next came the announcement of the new officers for 2014: President – Charles Carpenter, Vice President – Mike Bowen, and Secretary/Treasurer – Minerva Belote. Alumni directors for 2012-2015 are Tom Atwater, Paul Mishler, Carol Sue Gadson, and Gary Smith.

Bowen next introduced the honored classes, which were 1938, 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, and 1963. The Class of 1938 received recognition for having all three of its living members in attendance, Harvey L. Neu Jr., Carlton Pence, and Rozella Yoder. Special recognition was given to the oldest graduate in attendance, Doris Davis from the Class of 1931.

Those in attendance were: Phyllis Frey, John W. Haarer and Joyce Troyer from the Class of 1943; Robert Bontrager and Mark Bontrager from the Class of 1948; Shirley Antonides, Gertrude Austin, Carolyn Brandeberry, Verda Carpenter, John Ganger, Samuel Haarer, Rachel Lambright, Jewell Miller, Ruby Miller, Malcolm Prough Ralph Rheinheimer, Sharon Weirich, and Terry Yoder Class of 1953 (the most in attendance); Michael Bowen, Jack Geyer, Marilou Jones, Darlene Miller, Eleanor Mishler, and Merritt Yoder from the Class of 1958; and Darlene VanZuillen and Phillip Atwater from the Class of 1963.

Once all of the honored classes were identified, The New Harmony Quartet sang songs of each student era: “Whispering Hope” for the Class of 1938; ”Java Jive” for the Class of 1943, “Sentimental Journey” for the Class of 1948; “Unforgettable” for the Class of 1953; “I Don’t Want to Walk Without You” for the Class of 1958; and “What a Wonderful World” for the Class of 1963.

A special thank you was given to Sharon Bowen, Karen Vandermaas and Margaret Yoder who helped with the banquet, decorations and setting up the tables.

The meeting ended with Mark Bontrager, accompanied by MaryJane Friend at the piano, leading all attendees in the singing of both the “Shipshewana High School Song” and the “Shipshewana-Scott School Song.”
