S&H Metals of Topeka is at the top of its game as a supplier to the RV industry. The company was recently honored by Newmar Corporation, a manufacturer of high-end motor-homes, as one of its top 10 suppliers.
The award was given at a banquet held by the Nappanee manufacturer. Newmar has around 600 separate suppliers, with those having orders of $100,000 or more per year rated through a point system. Forty-one companies made the first cut and were invited to the banquet, where the top 10 were announced. S&H Metals owner Fritz Helmuth explained that the Newmar purchasing agents tally the points, looking at not just a final product but the entire process – from ordering to delivery to quality and service. “Their goal is to have more suppliers meet those criteria to be recognized,” Helmuth said.
S&H supplies luggage compartments, storage boxes, and generator and battery boxes to Newmar, with parts coated at the firm’s new facility west of Topeka.
S&H has been a supplier to Newmar for over 20 years. “Every year, it becomes harder and harder to meet the criteria,” Helmuth said. But this is the third time the company has earned a Top 10 Vendor award, and the second time in a row, having received it in 2012. Previously, the company earned the award in 1994. “I wish every company did this,” Helmuth added. “It sets the suppliers apart.”
S&H likes doing business with Newmar, Helmuth said, because the company has good common sense and is big on quality. He added that, as long as you make good products at a fair price, “They’ll keep doing business with you.”
But the quality from start to finish that earned S&H the award isn’t automatic. “If we didn’t have good workers, it wouldn’t happen,” Helmuth stated.
