Russell M. Burkhart, 88, LaGrange, formerly Shipshewana, died Sunday, April 15, 2012 at Miller’s Merry Manor of LaGrange.
He was born September 15, 1923, in Saline, Mich., to Charles R. and Vera F. (Mast) Burkhart.
He served 20 years at Saline, Mich., Community Schools before moving to Shipshewana in 1972, where he worked for Shipshewana Community Schools. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army, a livestock hauler, and taxi driver for the Amish. He attended Shipshewana Methodist Church.
He was married June 8, 1946, in Manchester, to Maxine Burmeister. She survives.
Also surviving are twin daughters, Jean R. (Jeff) Farmwald, Half Moon Bay, Calif., and Joan K. (Ray) Bontrager, Shipshewana; one son, Mark E. (Denise) Burkhart, Boise, Idaho; eight grandchildren, Jacquelynn, Megan, Brandon, Summer, Autumn, Eden, Jada, and Avery; three great-grandchildren, T.J., Izabella and Brooklyn; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Richard R. Burkhart, and one brother, Charles R. Burkhart.
Visitation is 12-2 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at Robinson-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline, Mich.
Services will be 2 pm. Thursday, April 19, at Robinson-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline, Mich., with Pastor John Wolf officiating.
Burial will be in Oak Wood Cemetery, Saline, Mich.
