Robert Lee


Robert E. Lee, 87, LaGrange, formerly of Van Buren Township, LaGrange County, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Miller’s Merry Manor of LaGrange.

    He was born March 20, 1925 in Van Buren Township, LaGrange County to Robert E. Sr. and Fern E. (Diley) Lee.

    Living all his life in LaGrange and Elkhart counties, he was a 1943 graduate of Scott High School and graduated from Purdue University in 1951 with a degree in Ag Education. He was the former owner and operator of Bob-O-Lou Farms, Inc. in Van Buren Township and the former owner and operator of Maple Lanes Bowling Alley in LaGrange. He was a former LaGrange County Commissioner, Van Buren Township Trustee, member of the Westview School Board, president of the Board of Directors of the LaGrange County Farm Bureau Co-Op, and member of the board of trustees of the LaGrange County Hospital. He was member and former chairman of trustees at Scott United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the George Washington Masonic Lodge #325 in Bristol, and a member of Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, Ind.  He was also former chairman of Ag Extension Committee, former chairman of LaGrange County Purdue Ags, former member of LaGrange County Council on Aging, member of Shipshewana Lions Club, and an original board member of the LaGrange County Community Foundation.

    He was married August 19, 1950, in Scott, to Martha Lou Bassett. She survives.

    Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Michael Bachmann, Richmond, Virg., and Colleen and Ronald Hostetler, Topeka; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Deb Lee, Middlebury, and Byron and Susie Lee, Shipshewana; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eleanor Smith, Elkhart.

    Visitation is 2-7:30 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. by the George Washington Masonic Lodge.

    Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at Scott United Methodist Church in Shipshewana with Reverend Jeffrey Stedge officiating.

    Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury.
