Robert L. James, 83, Sturgis, Mich., died Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at Thurston Woods Villa in Sturgis, Mich.
He was born March 12, 1930, in Warsaw, Ind., to Lee and Leola (Stanton) James.
Moving from LaGrange to Sturgis in 1961, he was a 1948 graduate of Warsaw High School. He and his wife owned and operated Economy Market and Ice Company in Sturgis for many years. He also worked at Wall Packing Company in Sturgis and Kroger Grocery Store in Warsaw and LaGrange. He served in the National Guard and was a past member of Loyal Order of Moose #575, Eagles Lodge #1314, and Ducks Unlimited.
He was married May 24, 1951, in Syracuse, Ind., to Frances Irene Byland. She preceded him in death on October 23, 2008.
Surviving are two daughters, Irene (Dan) Dumont, Bronson Mich., and Lou Ann (Michael) Cox, Sturgis, Mich.; two sons, Bill (Edie) James, Sturgis Mich., and Steve James, LaGrange; seven grandchildren, Tracie Syring, Sheri Hills, Holly Gentz, Jessica James, Jason Knapp, James Knapp and Damon James; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sisters, Hulda Mae James and Mary Alice James.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday, November 15, at Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel in Sturgis, Mich.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 16, at Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel in Sturgis, Mich., with Reverend Glenn Russell officiating.
Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Sturgis, Mich.
