Richard H. Spidell, age 82, Joplin, Mo., passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Freeman West Hospital.
Richard was born June 28, 1929 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, son of the late Harold and Ersal Malone Spidell.
He graduated from Sturgis High School in Sturgis, Michigan, and then earned a degree in engineering from Perdue University. He was an aeronautical engineer for Lockheed Martin where he worked for over 30 years. He loved coaching youth in both baseball and basketball, and did this for many years in the Palos Verdes, California area. He was very instrumental in organizing many local tournaments. He also was owner and operator of a trophy, sign, and plaques shop in Torrance, California which was called Spidell Specialties.
He married Genevieve Dunlevy on October 13, 1951 in Columbus, Ohio, she survives.
Additional survivors include his son, Jackson Spidell and wife Kathleen Martz-Spidell of Joplin; daughter, Karen Spidell of West Hills, California; grandchildren, Melissa Calvento and husband Gio of West Hills, Jamie Bassler and husband Nathan of McCalisterville, Pennsylvania, and Jackson Spidell of Marina Del Rey, California; great-grandchildren, Ashely, Joey, and Mikey Calvento.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Chaplain Christine Iannucilli officiating.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Chaplain Charitable Community Fund c/o Freeman Hospital. This organization provides medication for children in need when they cannot afford medicine, meals, and transportation.
