Richard Norman Kraft,83, Sturgis, Mich., died Friday, July 18, 2014 at his residence.
He was born March 8, 1931 in Sturgis, Mich., to Richard and Viola (Kraft) Kraft.
Living all his life in Sturgis, Mich., he was a 1948 graduate of Sturgis High School and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving four years during the Korean War aboard a destroyer support vessel stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. He first worked at Universal Diesel and worked at Formed Tubes in Sturgis, Mich., for many years until the company closed. He also worked at Abbot Laboratories and was the groundskeeper for Burr Oak Tool & Gauge for several years. He was an athletic official umpiring baseball, softball and volleyball for over 50 years. He played semi-pro baseball for G & A Truck Lines for 10 years and the Tri-State Litho Arts traveling fast pitch team for several years.
He was married to Violet Kline for five years. He then married Mary Ann Asbury in 1959 in White Pigeon, Mich. They were married for 27 years.
Surviving are his twin children, Kent Kraft, Sturgis, Mich., and Kendra (Dr. Jeffrey) Dash, Florida; two grandsons: Brandon and Sean Dash; one brother, Larry (Debi) Kraft, Sturgis, Mich.; his companion of 15 years, Edith Frye, Sturgis, Mich.; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sisters, Lois J. and Colleen Kraft.
Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes in Sturgis, Mich.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis, Mich., with Reverend Calvin Kolzow officiating. A luncheon will follow the service.
Burial will be in Sherwood Cemetery.
