Rev. Mary E. McGawn

 

Reverend Mary E. McGawn, 57, South Twin Lake in Howe, died Friday, May 18, 2012 at Parkview LaGrange Hospital.

    She was born March 13, 1955, in South Bend, Ind., to Donald R. and Wanda M. (Potter) McGawn.

    Growing up in New Carlisle, Ind., she moved from there to LaGrange County in 1979 to work for Lakeland Middle School. She was a graduate of Indiana University South Bend (IUSB), where she obtained both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education.  She was a special education and social studies teacher at Lakeland Middle School from August 1979 until her retirement in June 2010. She was a member and served the Howe United Methodist Church from 1990-2009. She was ordained by the Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1997 and did her post-graduate work at United Methodist seminaries.  She was also an ordained deacon with the United Methodist Church and was under appointment at Lakeland Middle School and Howe United Methodist Church.  She was a member of the Indiana Conference United Methodist Church and was very active in the ministries of the LaGrange First Church of God. She was also a member of LaGrange County Indiana Genelogical Society, Historic New Carlisle, Ind., and the Howe Community Association.

    Surviving are three sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Chuck DeMeyer, New Carlisle, Ind., Kathy and Kenny Sherry, Granger, Ind., and Donna and Randy Vermillion, New Carlisle, Ind.; her stepmother, Barbara McGawn, New Carlisle, Ind.; eight nieces and nephews, Don DeMeyer, Dan DeMeyer, Meg Buss, Kristin Sherry, Kevin Sherry, Karen Boschee, Ryan Vermillion and Missy Wise; one great-nephew, Nick Boschee; five great-nieces, Shauna and Cora Buss, Ella and Kate Boschee, and Tori DeMeyer; two aunts; and several cousins.

    She was preceded in death by her parents.

    Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday, May 21, at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange.

    Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at the LaGrange First Church of God with Reverend Brian VanOsdol officiating. 

    Burial will be in Galien Township Cemetery, Galien, Mich.
