LaGrange County Relay for Life had set a goal of $27,000 for its 2012 event. The event almost doubled that goal, raising a total of $52,700 by the end of last weekend to go toward the fight against cancer.
The total includes sponsorships, pre-event fundraisers, online donations, and money turned in by participants prior to the event. The relay brought in nearly $15,000 just during the 24-hour event, held at Lakeland High School.
Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday and going twice around the clock, the event had over 500 participants and visitors. The relay also had 119 registered cancer survivors take part.
Fabulous Footers was the top overall fundraising team and the top bank night team, raising over $5,000.
Beverly’s Bunch took top prizes for Best Campsite, Top Onsite Fundraising Team, and Mr. Relay Winner.
The Dauntless Dozen and Descendants was named Rookie Team of the Year.
Josh and Laura Phillips received the Relay Spirit Award. They were first-time relayers who took part in nearly all of the activities and dress-up hours. Josh is a newly-diagnosed survivor who just completed radiation treatments prior to the relay.
