Regional golf results

The stellar prep golfing career of Lakeland’s Spencer Mortola came to an end last Thursday when he came up short of advancing from the IHSAA regional tournament held at Stonehenge Golf Club in Warsaw.

Mortola, who won medalist honors at this regional last year when it was held at Orchard Ridge Country Club in Fort Wayne, fired a five-over par 76 on the Stonehenge links. The score left him four shots out of a playoff for the fifth and final state tournament bid.

A bogey on the opening hole and a double-bogey on the second quickly put the Laker ace in ditch he could never quite climb out of. Mortola registered birdies on the par-four fifth and the par-five ninth holes to finish the front side in 38 strokes.

Mortola got off to another slow start on the back side when he double-bogeyed the par-four 11th hole and bogeyed the par-four 13th. Birdies on the par-five 15th and 18th holes were offset by bogeys on the 16th and 17th, resulting in another 38 for the Laker senior.

Stephen Shupert of Carroll (Allen) claimed the last state finals slot with a one-over par 72. Michael Sharp (70) of East Noble, Michael Makris (70) of Mishawaka Marian, Will Erekson (71) of Northridge and Carter Dornseif (71) of Heritage were the other individuals to gain a state finals berth.

Jon Schram of Warsaw carded a two-under par 69 to earn medalist honors and lead the host Tigers to the regional team championship with a score of 305. Triton, which also shot 305 but finished second due to the fifth-man tie breaker, and Fort Wayne Dwenger (309) garnered team bids to the state tournament, scheduled for this Tuesday and Wednesday at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin.
