Public hearing Monday on Topeka water rates

The Topeka Town Council will hold a public hearing on proposed fire protection charges at their Monday, Nov. 11, meeting beginning at 5 p.m.

The proposed rates will be an additional monthly charge to town water customers based on the size of the water meter being billed. The fees range from an additional $5.70 per month for 5/8-inch meters to $285 per month for six-inch meters. The rate chart includes charges for meters up to 12 inches, but the town does not currently have any meters over six inches. The town has 344 users with a 5/8-inch meter. Only one customer has a six-inch meter.

If passed, the charges will bring in just over $4,000 per month and around $49,000 per year for the town’s water department.

The fees, if approved, will replace a general fund line item that previously went to the water department. The town is looking to earmark the general funds money once used for the water department for a future water tower, which is part of the town’s five-year plan.
