Prairie Heights gets police department

It’s the PH P.D. as the Prairie Heights School Board voted Monday to create a police department for the school corporation.

The board also hired Gaylon Wisel II as the School Resource Officer and Transportation Director. Wisel has been in law enforcement for over 20 years, serving as a patrolman, deputy, warrants officer, evidence officer, DARE officer and school resource officer.

For the past 12 years he has been a school resource officer, seven of those years with a K9 partner, Bandit. Wisel is an Indiana School Safety Specialist as well as chairman of the DeKalb County Safe School Commission. He has also been a presenter for the National School Board Association, Indiana School Board Association and the Indiana School Safety Specialist Academy.

The board also hired a new principal for the Prairie Heights Middle School. Long-time Prairie Heights educator Damon Witherspoon has been the middle school assistant principal and athletic director since 2012. Prior to that, he was the PE/health teacher at Prairie Heights High School for seven years and another four years at the middle school. He has also served as an athletic coach, assistant athletic director and Freshman Focus sponsor.
