Prairie Heights broke into the football win column last Friday with a 32-14 NECC victory over the host Fairfield Falcons.
The decision snapped a 12-game Panther losing streak to the Falcons. The last Prairie Heights win over Fairfield came in 2003 (13-0).
Fairfield broke to a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a 24-yard touchdown heave from Kyle Mast to Forrest Glogouski. Reid Kammerdiener tacked on the PAT kick.
But on the ensuing kickoff, Panther junior Joey Barry busted through the Fairfield coverage unit and scampered 83 yards for a touchdown. Later in the half, Barry raced 68 yards to paydirt, giving the Panthers a 12-7 halftime edge.
Prairie Heights’ special teams set up the next Panther score by recovering the opening kickoff of the second half. Six plays later, senior quarterback Kyler West tossed a nine-yard scoring strike to classmate Corey Johnson to put the Panthers ahead, 19-7.
The Falcons appeared to be on their way to cutting into the Heights lead when senior linebacker Zach Shepard picked up a Fairfield fumble and sped 58 yards for a score. Johnson’s Pat kick boosted the difference to 26-7.
A 15-yard touchdown pass from Mast to Mitch DeWitt late in the third frame pulled Fairfield back to within 12 (26-14). But field goals of 26 and 14 yards by Johnson in the fourth quarter kept the Falcons at bay.
Barry rushed 13 times for 162 yards and senior Bobby Blum gained 69 yards on five attempts to spearhead the Panther ground attack. West was 5-9 through the air for 73 yards. Blum hauled in three of the aerials covering 51 yards.
Mast completed 13-25 passes for 153 yards. Glogouski was his favorite target, as he snared seven balls for 96 yards.
The 1-1 Panthers host two-time defending NECC champion Churubusco (2-0) this Friday at Hubert Cline Field.
