Prairie Heights claims top speller

Zane Rowden drew the number one slot for Wednesday’s LaGrange County Spelling Bee, which ended up being very appropriate as the Prairie Heights Middle School 5th grader took the top spot in the contest.

Rowden spelled “carbohydrates” to outlast runner-up Elijah Williams from Lakeland Middle School, who missed “stroganoff” in the 11th round.

Rowden is the son of Trent and Tiffany Rowden of Wolcottville. Williams is the son of Jeremy and Andrea Williams of LaGrange.

Rowden will now go on to compete in the regional spelling bee, slated for March 10 at IPFW. The winner of the regional competition will advance to the national bee in Washington, D.C.

A total of seven LaGrange County students lined up for the spelling bee in the Wilson Auditorium at Westview Jr.-Sr. High School. Other contestants were Collin Alleshouse from Lima-Brighton Elementary, Courtney Ritchie from Parkside Elementary, Morgan Kelly from Westview Elementary, Daniel Gill from Westview Jr.-Sr. High School, and Rachel Raber from Wolcott Mills Elementary.
