Prairie Heights opened its 2014 varsity baseball campaign Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader from host Lakewood Park.
Jacob Heller crashed two hits, including a home run, and both Bo Murphy and Tyler Christman plated three runs with a pair of safeties as the Panthers routed Lakewood in the first game, 13-3. Bobby Blum slapped a pair of doubles, collected two RBI and scored three times for Heights. Corey Johnson lined an RBI single.
Murphy pitched all five innings in the contest. He gave up five hits, did not walk a batter and fanned eight.
In the nightcap, two Lakewood Park errors in the top of the seventh inning were enough to lift Prairie Heights to a 9-8 triumph.
Tanner Perkins began the Panther seventh by reaching on a Lakewood bobble. Zeb Domer, who came in to run for Perkins, scampered all the way home on a bunt single that was thrown away into right field.
Heller belted a second round-tripper and a double to knock in three runs. Blum, Christman and Jared Beechy also ripped two hits.
Johnson, who relieved Heller on the mound in the sixth inning, would get the pitching win, whiffing three in two frames. Heller tossed the initial five innings, striking out seven.
