Praire Heights girls win two

Prairie Heights began its 2012-13 varsity girls basketball season this past weekend by defeating NECC rival Hamilton and non-conference foe Elkhart Christian.

Led by Tressa Terry’s 13 points, the Lady Panthers were able to subdue a scrappy Hamilton club, 32-26 Thursday evening in Hamilton. Heights also got seven big points from both Kayla Feeney and Shawna Carbone, and a huge basket from Rebekah Frey midway through the fourth quarter that began the Lady Panthers’ final push.

“I can’t say enough about the defense we played tonight,” said Prairie Heights head coach Kevin Frey, whose charges held Hamilton to an icy, 9-45 shooting effort from the field. “Offensively, we are still a work in progress. We are definitely better shooters than what we showed tonight.”

Lindsey Stoy tallied 13 points for Hamilton.

The Lady Panthers came back Saturday night and rolled to a 48-12 triumph over visiting Elkhart Christian. Carbone, who ended up topping the Heights scoresheet with 18 points, netted six of her markers in the first period to help the hosts open up a 23-0 lead.

Terry joined Carbone in double figures with 11 points. Carbone and Frey each grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the Lady Panthers in that department.

Brionne Lowe led Elkhart Christian with four points.
