Phyllis Mandigo


Phyllis Joan Mandigo,87, Sturgis, Mich., died Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Miller’s Merry Manor of LaGrange.

    She was born April 13, 1925, in Stroh, to Thad and Emily (Ernsberger) Hall.

    Moving from Howe to Sturgis, Mich., in 1947, she was a 1943 graduate of Lima High School in Howe. She continued her education at the Ft. Wayne Lutheran School of Nursing, receiving a diploma as a registered nurse. She was a registered nurse and was employed at the Sturgis Hospital for 40 years, working in the O.B. department from 1969-1976 and retiring in 1986. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, serving as a deacon and member of the choir.  She was a charter member of the Southwest Michigan Perinatal Association Board and was instrumental in the establishment of the Sturgis Gateway Fitness Run. She was named Sturgis Citizen of the Year in 1981.

    She was married August 24, 1947, in Howe, to Fred Mandigo Jr. He survives.

    Also surviving are three daughters, Victoria (Robert) Braquet, Katy, Texas, Virginia (James) Keen, Eaton, Ohio, and Valerie (Emmett) Cosgrove, South Haven, Mich.; one son, Vaughn (Debbie) Mandigo, Sturgis, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Scott (Jessica) Braquet, Nicole (Daniel) Matson, Ed Braquet, Benjamin Keen, Michelle (David) Clouse, Marci (Clinton) Lehman, and Patrick Cosgrove; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Waldo Hall, and two sisters, Doris Briggs and Margaret Hall.

    Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday, February 8, at Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel in Sturgis, Mich. 

    Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 9, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, Mich., with Pastor Robert Keim officiating. 

    Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Sturgis, Mich.

     Memorials may be directed to the Sturgis Hospital Guild Nurses Scholarship Fund or Juvenile Diabetes Summer Camp.
