Philip A. Bir, 79, LaGrange, died Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Miller’s Merry Manor of LaGrange.
He was born July 3, 1932 to Henry and Gertrude (Haas) Bir.
He was a 1954 graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor’s degree in business. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and from 1954-1956. He moved to New York in 1956 to pursue a career in singing. He moved back to LaGrange in 1959 and started his own business consultant service that he owned and operated until his recent illness. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in LaGrange, where he was very active all areas of the church. He was a member of the local Knights of Columbus, 2016 Committee to celebrate the 200th birthday of the State of Indiana, LaGrange Library Building Board, and led an adult variety show at Lakeland High School. He was also a founder of Citizens Bank in LaGrange, which is now Lake City Bank.
He was married in 1963, in Kendallville, to Sara Crowell. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Anthony and Teresa Bir, Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Rachel and Andrew Stroop, LaGrange; six grandchildren, Blake, Luke, Nathan and Casey Bir and Beka and Beth Stroop; and one sister, Marty and Jack Kennell, Grand Island, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Bridgett, two brothers, William and Henry Bir, and three sisters, Dorothy Groak, Catherine Todd and Eleanor Harp.
Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 2, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in LaGrange with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, February 3, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in LaGrange with Father Andy Martinez officiating
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, LaGrange.
Memorials may be directed to the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund.
