Panther girls upend Bronson

A strong start to the second half propelled Prairie Heights to a 57-44 varsity girls basketball victory over visiting Bronson, Michigan Tuesday night.

Trailing 25-21 after two periods and 27-21 seconds into the third quarter, the Lady Panthers reeled off 11 straight points to take a 32-27 lead. Seniors Kayla Feeney and Rebekah Frey, who were playing their final game at the Panther Pit, sparked the run – Feeney with a pair of two-point baskets and one from beyond the three-point stripe, and Frey with a pair of free throws and a couple of assists.

“We moved the ball much better in the second half and hit our open shots,” said Lady Panther head coach Kevin Frey, whose club leveled its season record at 9-9 with the win.

The Prairie Heights underclassmen took over in the fourth quarter to help ensure a happy Senior Night. Three-pointers by sophomore McKenzie Kain and junior Tressa Terry, along with a deuce and three-point play by junior Shawna Carbone in the opening minutes of the final frame boosted the Lady Panther lead to 49-36.

Carbone finished the contest with 23 points and eight rebounds. Terry wound up with 11 points and seven boards, while Feeney totaled nine markers and a team-best four assists.

Mallorie Bassage canned 15 points and Skyler Sobeski 14 to pace Bronson. Bassage netted all but four of her tallies in the first half.

“Our girls did a good job of covering up Bassage in the second half and we brought out our guards to put more pressure on the ball,” said Frey.

The Lady Panthers visit Class A No. 1 Fort Wayne Canterbury Thursday night.
